What is a Zone File?

Zone files are text files that contain information about domains, subdomains, and the Domain Name System. The zone files are essential to the operation of DNS servers.

What is a Zone File?

A Zone File is the main database used by the Domain Name System to translate numeric IP addresses into domain names. This text file can be edited by any plain-text program.

This file contains several types of records. These records include start of authority (SOA) records, nameserver records, mail exchanger records, host records and CNAME records.

Start Of Authority Record (SOA)

This record is the first in a DNS Zone file. It declares authoritative information to nameservers about the domain. After this record, there are other resource records which store IP address and other information relevant to the domain such as mailservers.

Nameserver Record - NS

These records identify the authoritative DNS for the domain. These records are what recursively resolve other domains, when they receive requests from other nameservers.

NS Records are also used for aliases as well as other DNS data. These records form a vital part of DNS, and must appear in all zones for all names to be resolved correctly.

NXDOMAIN - Message From The Domainnameserver

The nxdomain message is sent when the resolving name server cannot help it to obtain information about a domain because the zone file does not contain the information it needs. The resolving named server then routes the query on to the next resolving names server listed in its local list.

PTR Pointer Record

It is a kind of zone record (PTR), which specifies IP addresses to which specific namepoints point when they are resolved in the reverse direction. It can be used for name resolution, or to specify the corresponding IP address of a nxDOMAIN when the zone file does not contain one.

This record is especially important for reverse DNS lookups, where it is used to send the corresponding IP address back to the client requesting a namepoint.

A CNAME – Comma separated name record

The CNAME record is the most common type of DNS record. These records are used to define a comma-separated name (such as fred.com).

These records are used primarily for name resolution but can be used to define the address of a domain name or nxDOMAIN.

CNAMEs may be created or deleted by users, but it is not recommended that they be used without an administrator's knowledge. This is due to the fact that an unauthorized user can change an existing CNAME record and cause it to become unresolvable.
