What is a "host name"?

google cloud platform web hosting

A hostname describes a type name that is assigned a server or device to a computer network. It is a unique identifier, similar to a user's nickname for a certain device. In the past the Internet's request for comments sought the standard definition for a hostname.

Hostnames may be simple or more structured. They are typically used in an administrative capacity. But, a hostname could also be used for an alias. A domain name that contains a DNS name and is mapped to an address IP is the simplest type of hostname. This makes it easy for users to recall a website's URL and to easily reach it.

Logging onto a computer is done by the user typing in the hostname instead of an IP address. To illustrate, the browser will send the user to a certain webpage if they type "mydomain.com". Similarly, a hostname can be used to identify a device within a local network, whereas an IP address can only be used to address a device on the Internet.

Computers as well other electronic devices use hostnames in order to communicate with others and with one another. Hostnames can be used for many types of services, such as mail servers, data transmission protocols, and various web servers.

Each hostname is mapped with an IP address unique to it and stored in DNS. Depending on the type of network, the hostname must meet various requirements.

The hostname can be freely given if the network of the user is a local one. If the network is a local area network, you can freely assign the hostname. However, in a wider area network, hostnames need to be assigned via a DNS system.

Although they are generally short, hostnames can have as much as 255 characters. The Internet protocol being used determines how long the hostname will be. Some of the common internet protocols include HTTP, TCP / IP, and RC 5321. A hostname can contain as little as five characters and as much as 255 characters. The ASCII character sets are generally accepted, but some networks allow hosts use special symbols, higher- or lowercase letters and digits.

Internet's first hostname specifications required hostnames must begin with a letter and digit. Hostnames could be either a hyphen, minus sign or a letter. Many systems ignore the case of the hyphen or minus sign, although it is recommended that the hostname not be accompanied by spaces.

Over time, hostnames have changed and now form part of the Fully Qualified domain name, which uniquely identifies every computer on the Internet. They are used by various types of services in a network and are a convenient method to locate and identify devices.

A DNS domain name also includes hostnames. They are used to help users locate websites by domain name. In a wide area network, they can be found in lists of computers, such as Active Directory. These names are also used in email headers and in other naming systems.
